So yeah, I got the damn thing on day of release, and spotted the High Flyer Edition in my local GAME store. For those wondering what the Hell that means, it comes with a limited edition t-shirt, postcards, 2008 calendar and a CAW guide.
Anyway, today's the day when I'll be able to play for a few hours. I'll start out playing as Jeff Hardy in 24/7 mode, and I'll come back later and let you guys know what I think!

Well, I've gotta say I love it! The new control system makes alot of sense once you get used to it, and I'm pleased to see you actually have the option of controlling both superstars in tag matches - definitely something that has irritated me in previous incarnations of the Smackdown series. No longer do I have to watch on as my tag partner gets a vicious beating in the middle of the ring.
I've played through the first storyline, and now halfway through the second - it is still fairly easy to beat the AI, but it's the storylines that are hooking me in at the moment.
The game is a bit buggy. For example, I won a tag match, but the post-match video showed my defeated opponents celebrating in the ring. And yes, there definitely seems to be a lot less moves at your disposal this time round, but the matches do flow pretty well - you don't have to do too much thinking about your next move anyway, which will probably make for some pretty competetive online matches.
Haven't had a chance to look at anything other than 24/7 mode, but I'm sure I'll get round to checking out CAW mode and general manager mode at some point over the weekend.
Loving it so far!

Uh..... aren't you able to control your Tag Partner in SvR07? Or are you talking about in 24/7 Mode?

I've heard you won't be able to assign finishers to CAWs this time around, and that the game assigns them based on the styles you select. Here's hoping that's changed...

Wow....sounds like playing the full game does help, instead of the demo. Will be looking forward to xmas then once I get it.

Dunno where in the hell you heard that, but that's completely false, and pretty stupid. What you heard was a rumor at best, and a bad one at that.

Well, that's a relief.
Though, in hindsight, I guess I misunderstood what I was told. Apparently I took "special move" to mean finisher. It was probably referring to stuff like the "rampage" and whatnot.

Yeah, the finishers are still the same (and you can select anything you like in CAW mode), but there are "special moves" depending on what kind of superstar you are. So far I've only experienced a few different ones. The highflyers seem to be the only ones who are able to play possum (which, might I add, is extremely effective). Rampage is pretty cool, and basically means none of your strikes or grapples can be reversed. Then, there's dirty mode which allows you to hide behind the referee and push him into your opponent.
I'll be playing it again most of tomorrow, so I'll update with any new features I come across. I'll close this post by letting you all know that the fatal four way ladder matches in the second story I played in 24/7 is without doubt one of the best matches I have ever experienced in a wrestling game, and I've been playing them since the first Smackdown on PS1!

Looks like THQ have actually gone a decent step forward then....could you comment on the CAWs this year once you get a chance then?

CAW mode is pretty much exactly the same as 07, with some extras. It's fairly easy to recreate every 07 CAW on 08 - all the colours are exactly the same, and all the different items of attire are there, though they have been moved about a bit. There are a fair few extras to use as well, such as additional hairstyles and the Jason Voorhies mask!
Other than that, not much to comment on really - they've stuck with the same system as last time, though you do have the ability to add a logo to any piece of clothing (rather than having to place a design over the top).
Warren Peace is identical to the 07 version at the moment, but I'll probably redo him when we get closer to the switch.
The big difference is in Create An Entrance mode. It used to be pretty frustrating timing lighting effects / pyros to go off as soon as the segment of the entrance begins, but they've added a nice slider bar that shows you exactly how far through that segment you are - I no longer have a slight gap at the beginning before the red lights kick in!
Oh yeah, and we've got custom soundtracks this year!

Well, as long as I can re-create Zero and a few others, I'm happy lol

Hmmm, they've taken out some of the moves Warren Peace was using, so I'm gonna have to do a new moveset this year. Apart from that, it's all good!

Right, I've actually got a negative comment here. In 24/7 mode you only have a limited selection of Superstars. I didn't notice this straight away because the guy I wanted to play with (Jeff Hardy) is one of the playable ones. You can get around it by recreating whoever you want to play as in CAW mode, so it's not really that big a deal.

I know you can't play as the ECW wrestlers, but that's about it.

You're limited to certain Smackdown and Raw wrestlers too ... for example, you can't play as Umaga or The Greath Khali. There's actually only about 10 you can play with (can't remember which ones and the 360s switched off at the moment).

I guess even on video games WWE doesnt want certain wrestlers pushed... thats jus silly to not use the people YOU want.

It's to do with the voice acting - they didn't get every superstar out there to lend their voice to the game, and as the superstar you play as speaks, you've only got a limited selection. Either that or just recreate whoever you want to play as in CAW mode and play with the CAW version.

You can't play as everyone in 07 either. So it's nothing new really. And let's face it who wants to play as Khali... ROTFLMAO
