Wow. Steven Spielberg kicks ass!
Because he brought his idea to EA and Boom Blox was born. Holy shit.
This is one of those games that sort of defies classification. It's sort of a puzzler, but it can also be general mayhem. It's also one of those games where you'll never, ever realize how awesome it is until you play it.
Taking the motion tracking capabilities of the Wii to the max (and providing some of the tightest-controlling games I've ever seen), Boom Blox provides you with over 300 levels made of blocks that you have to destroy in different ways. In some levels, you'll be throwing baseballs, bowling balls or even bombs at the block structures; some, you'll be grabbing a block and swinging it around at the other blocks. Others, you might be pulling out blocks, Jenga-style.
In some levels, you'll have to take out all of a certain type of block with a minimum number of throws. Depending the on the blocks in the level, you might be hitting some for points and avoiding others that penalize you.
No matter what, you'll always end up destroying something, and that's the true beauty of Boom Blox. It's like having someone build intricate structures and then getting to knock them the hell down.
Controls are simple; aim where you want to throw, hold down the a button to lock on, whip the controller and release the button. The Wii gauges how hard you throw and lets you nail stuff accordingly. Holding down the B trigger controls the camera so you can get the optimal angle on your target.
On the levels where you pull the blocks, you simply aim where you want to grab, hold down A and move the control in the direction you want to pull or push. Ditto for swinging the blocks around.
It's amazingly simple, and simply amazing. Hell, I haven't even gotten into adventure mode (storyline-based); I've been playing the tutorial and explore modes, which give you the basics and let you learn how the game works. There's also a co-op/vs. party mode AND a create mode, where you can stack the blocks how you want them and save the levels for further play.
It sounds ridiculous, but it's amazingly fun, and even at the $50 price tag, it's completely worth it. Honestly, it's my favorite single-player game that I've played on the Wii so far. IGN has a trailer and more; I encourage any and everybody who has a Wii to check it out, because it's WELL worth it.
