So not too terribly long ago, I yanked out my Dreamcast to hop back into SoulCalibur and to introduce my son to the game, which he loved and at which he proceeded to beat 83 shades of green hell out of me.
Naturally when SoulCalibur popped up on XBox Live as an Arcade title, I downloaded the demo, which was nice and everything and touted cleaned-up graphics and HD compatibility and whatnot, but honestly it fell short- the character models looked sort of plastic-y and the textures looked muddy in bits and just shitty in general. I mean, I think it looked better on the Dreamcast myself.
And of course, I've preordered the special edition of SoulCalibur 4, because I'll be DAMNED if I'm gonna miss out on a SoulCalibur artbook. And a KEYCHAIN! w00t.
But I've had an itch to get back in the ring, so today I ran out and spent $7 on an used copy (for the XBox, mind you; fuck some Link and Heihachi) of SoulCalibur 2, both because my son has no concept of time (3 weeks; might as well tell him 8 years, he doesn't have a clue) and because I have no concept of patience.
So I played through a little singleplayer before work- my son was at his grandma's house- and I've just gotta say, I have no idea why in the hell I ever got rid of it.
Granted, I've never played SoulCalibur 3 because of the ps2 exclusivity thing, but I've played Soul Edge, Soul Blade, and SoulCalibur 1 and 2, and I've gotta say that I think 4 is gonna be something really special, because 2 sure as hell is.
I mean, first off, all the characters, returning and new- Spawn and Necrid on the XBox version (even if Necrid is just a mishmash of fighter styles, he looks goddamn cool)- all the unlockable weapons and stuff; I mean, hell, it's awesome. Tight controls, excellent graphics- not only is this bad daddy pretty, but it's HD compatible as hell and if it wasn't for the hair on the characters and a couple of weapon textures, it would look like a solid 360 title. Well, and the lack of widescreen support, but the screen still goes out further than it does on SoulCalibur, so . Colorful, gorgeous, and with controls that work better on the 360 than they did on the old school XBox- this is a solid title that anyone should experience, and it's the perfect brush-up for the coming SC4.
Don't get me wrong, I suck at the game. I don't memorize movesets and combos and all of that- I just pick a few characters and figure them out a lil bit and go kick the ass. I fully expect to get trashed tomorrow by my 4 year old son- again. But if you have... well, any of the 3 current or last-gen systems and you like a good fighter, or you're looking forward to SC4, take the time and spend the $7-$9 and get yo'self reacquainted with the guys and gals of SoulCalibur 2- I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Unless of course you already have it, or have recently played it, in which case I just wasted your time.
But for anyone that wonders about it on the 360- gawdDAMN it looks good!!! If it weren't for the oddly craptastic texture on the blade of Spawn's axe, well- it looks GOOD, dammit! lol
