Finally got my hands on one of these, and yep, I likes it!
If you have one of the Rock Band 1 guitars, you pretty much know what to expect. All buttons are the same, so no surprises there.
The neat surprise came with the strum bar. I'd read that they'd tightened it up after complaints of the 'mushiness' of the old strum bar. Now, personally, I dug the shit out of the 'mushiness'- I don't like feeling a 'click click click' every time I strum the damn thing. I can live with it if it isn't too bad- like with the Rock Band Official Bass- but I hate controllers like the Guitar Hero III wireless. CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK. Screw that, screw that twice.
The neck buttons have a firmer feeling to them, which is really nice, but they don't click as loud as the old ones used to- also a bonus. Really nice.
The auto calibration is a LIFESAVER. I was going nuts playing the bass, because I had to manually calibrate. My settings ended up being something like Audio 10ms, Video 45ms or something, but when I autocailbrated with the guitar, the settings were Audio 6ms, Video 66ms or something close to that. I was losing a random note here and there on the bass, especially during long fast runs of the same note. Now I'm still missing a couple, but I think that's got more to do with actually playing with the correct calibration than anything else- now it feels like I'm playing along with the song, instead of with the onscreen notes AGAINST the song.
Calibration is accomplished by going to the in-game calibration, selecting auto, and then you hold the guitar close to your speakers. It'll make a beep noise a few times with a status bar onscreen, and then boom, done. Same thing with the video calibration, but you hold the guitar close to your tv screen and the screen flashes repeatedly. (If you've had epilepsy problems with video in the past, do NOT watch this- I can see this thing messing with folks like that.) Same thing- status bar, boom, done.
No complaints so far. Overdrive is less sensitive than the bass, but activates every single time I've hit it. It's REALLY nice. I can play with the guitar at a slight angle (my preferred stance) without worrying about accidentally activating it, but the moment I actually tilt the thing, BOOM, Overdrive, no worries there. Supercool.
If you're in the market for a Rock Band guitar, you could definitely do a lot worse than the Rock Band 2 wireless. It's as sweet a guitar as I've seen, period.
