So if you've what even as little as an hour on tv here lately you've probably seen the commercials for the UFC game. I rented it today from my local video store, more curious than anything. I was actually expecting some kind of cracked out button masher fighting game but the game isn't like that at all. I compare it to an expanded version of Fight Night Round 3. Like Round 3 the joystick comes into play pretty heavily, only in Round 3 all but 3 things were done with the right joystick. In UFC the joystick is used for grappling for taking opponents down on the ground and then used for positioning to try and lock in a submission or take the advantageous position for ground-and-pound. Striking is relegated to the main four buttons, square, x, triangle, and circle since I'm playing on the PS3.
As far as gameplay goes, it's a UFC game, what is there really to say? You train, you rest, you train, you rest, you fight, you rest, rinse and repeat and you got 99% of Career Mode which is the meat of the game. It's during the fights that I really sometimes think I'm watching FNR3 gameplay. Almost everything is the same, the cuts appear in the same places, the blood has that same weird glassy shine, even in the slow-mo parts the skin flabs and flops in the same way. UFC gives you a much broader view of the arena and crowd unlike FNR3 where the camera was fully zoomed in on just the fighters. The camera moves with the fighters, so when your fights start moving 360 the camera goes with them so you're always looking at their sides. The only time the camera remains stationary while the fighters move is when they're on the ground vying for position. The more damanged a person gets, the more zoomed-in the camera becomes. When the view is just like that from FNR3, you know someone is about to go down.
Storyline...well, there is none. There's one true cinema in the game and that's in the very beginning when you start career mode. Career mode is basically what you'd expect, you start at the bottom of your division and work your way up eventually becoming the champion then working on getting into the hall of fame.
Create-a-Fighter is present in the game, but it's lacking. I guess I can't really back that up though in saying this is what it should have since this isn't like WWE where they can come down to the ring wearing whatever they want. Career mode is exclusively for your created fighter, you start out in a try out match observed by Dana White and win or lose you officially join UFC afterwards. As your fighter fights, he gets Cred. Gain more cred for winning. Cred is more or less the currency of the game, even though you don't spend it. As you gain Cred, companies will begin to sponsor you. Once you're sponsored, you can add the companies logo to your trunks. Having the logo on your trunks will give you a bonus to Cred received after a match. The more logos you have, the more cred you earn.
**Trivia: Since both games were made by THQ, one of the companies that will come to sponsor you is the Ultor Unlimited company from Saints Row 2**
The main purpose of Cred is to advance you in the rankings, but it will unlock other things like better training equipment to raise stats faster when you train and the support of other training facilities.
Speaking of unlockables, there don't seem to be too many. Far as I can there's only three unlockable characters, and all of them are game original and don't exist outside of it. Suspiciously missing from the game is Randy Couture. When I saw he wasn't on the roster anywhere, I looked to see if maybe he was an unlockable but he wasn't even mentioned, he's not even been confirmed for DLC yet. I mean it is a sport that has it's legends that have retired so I expected people like Bas Ruten or Ken Shamrock to be unlockables, but they're not here. Maybe they're planned for future DLC.
The sound aspect of the game is a little lacking too. On the menu select screens is the only time I've heard the games soundtrack, and there's some pretty good music on it. Even though the only songs I can recognize off the top are "Click Click Boom" by Saliva and "Famous" by Puddle of Mudd. When you're in the career mode screens, the only sound you hear is the UFC theme and clipits of audio from popular UFC events that just loops over and over and over... There's only so many times when you can hear Brock Lesnar screaming "Do you see me now?!" before you start to go a little insane. The match commentary is repetitive and annoying. The only time they'll say something different is if someone well known like Brock Lesnar or Chuck Liddell is in the ring. All the other times they're just talking about how it looks somebody is really hurting or how hard they got hit with the punch.
The difficulty of the game is pretty fair. Although there's a lot of moments where someone will get what I call being godsmacked. Perfect example of someone getting godsmacked was Brock Lesnar when he fought Frank Mir. Brock was winning but in just a flash he lost because Frank got that submission in. That can happen in this game too. So many times where I'll be turning someone's face into hamburger, then they'll get me in an armbar because they managed to counter one punch of mine and I lose.
I think that has about all the bases covered. Long story short, if you're tired of games like Tekken or Street Fighter or hell even SmackDown vs RAW and want a more realistic feeling game, then pick this up. Otherwise, it's a rental. I haven't even had it a full day yet and I'm already UFC Heavyweight Champion.
