I have been keeping myself a little busy. Anyone noticed the new Nerf guns? Well I felt inspired & had some extra time on my hands. So I got a little busy. Here is the first one. It started life as the Nerf Maverick, see base Model pic. From there I modded it to open the dart magazine all the way, its called the Russian Roulette mod. Then added some pennies behind the spring to make it shoot futher, called the penny mod. Then I demeled away the logos & repainted it to my liking. I must say I'm really pleased with it. It now shoots darts 25-30 feet & is great fun! Base Model Nerf Maverick Next Project... Price for it? This is the nerf Vulcan Battery-powered Machine Gun. It shoots a 25 darts from a belt. The best part is this thing is $45 on stores, but I got this one at a local pawn shop for only $2.00(Batteries included & it works)!!! I will spend more on paint than it cost to pick it up,LOL. So what do you think? Feedback appreciated...

Sweet! I have a couple of mavericks myself but I never did any Modding to them, yours looks awesome! All you have to do forthe penny mod is just stick a couple behind the spring to increase the tension? Ill definitely do that but now I really want to paint it too. The maverick has got to be the coolest nerf gun ever. I have two laying around the house just in case I ever get the urge to shoot someone or the tv. When am I gonna grow up huh?

That is one pretty fuckin' sweet mod, looks pretty easy to do too. What kind of finish did you use? That's like cryin' for a nice coat of glossy- it's a damn piece of art! Though it would definitely go better with a twin...

Veeker, Here are some great sites for mods you can do. Plus they are all really easy! nerfguns.net/nerfhaven.com/forums/index.php?s=841793958e91795fe75be9aac146f159&showforum=2modworks.blogspot.com/The penny mod is super easy to do. Just take it apart & place 5 pennies behind the spring. This increases the tension & added 10-15 feet of distance to my shots. I was totally amazed by the difference. Chupa, I used Tamiya Flat black & Gun Metal. I picked them up at my local hobby store. But I totally will be putting a clear coat on it asap! But you know how it is, just had to post some pics On a side note, I have a question for a future project with the Vulcan. I picked up another from that same pawn shop for $9.99 & have an idea for it. So which one do you think would look better? I did these in MS Paint just to get an idea of what it would look like when completed. #1:WW2 style #2 Mobster Version #3 6-Barreled Death #4 Heavy Gun P.S. Here is a totally amazing Nerf gun modded into the Gears of War lancer! Totally amazing!! Plus the chainsaw works!!! hacknmod.com/hack/make-gears-of-war-lancer-from-a-nerf-gun/

Just be careful putting on the clearkote- that shit can dry moving parts together like nobody's business, or increase the torque, and I imagine that would make the gun significantly less fun to use.
One goofy geek tip: if you develop any problems with paint rub at the various joints, dab on and smooth over a layer of Crazy Glue and keep moving the joint until it dries. This is more durable than clearkote or just about any other finish- but it comes at the expense of a slightly rougher surface appearance. A lot of figure customizers use it for joints to prevent the dreaded "joint rub."
As for the designs, I like 3 and 4. 3 is my fav, but 4 kind'a has that old-school Marvel Cable huge-ass futuristic gun look to the barrel that I always dug. Smoothing out the hard edges on the end and losing the side holes (and if possible, extending it back to the body, instead of having the base of the barrel(s) there in the pic) would make it look even more like that, if you're into that kind'a stuff.
And I want a Nerf Lancer. OMFG!!! lol

My personal fav is also Gun 4. I tried the changes you mentioned Chupa & I'm totally loving it! Plus it will be alot easier to extend the end "box" all the way to the base instead of leaving the barrels showing. I removed the holes & was very pleased with how it looks. Plus I have a few ideas for it. Brainstorm time! My father owns a HVAC company, so of course I have access to it. So the end "box" will be made out of 24 gauge sheet metal! I will paint it of course, but it will be tons easier to make it from metal instead of spending time grinding on plastic sheets. Plus he also has some 4" round metal I can use to make Gun #1 a reality. I can even modify the same gun with "removable barrels" so I could swap them out whenever I wanted. Yea baby!!! I'm even thinking of ways that I could put a red laser into the end of gun #4 for targeting. That shouldn't prove too difficult. Here is a rough pic of Gun #5 "Cable Style"

OK, after 3 weeks of time. I present to you...The new & improved Nerf Vulcan! This thing is solid! I made the front piece from 24gauge sheet metal & used expanding foam to secure it to the barrel. This gun even still fires nerf darts from the belt! Its been alot of fun at the office this week!

Damn, lookin' pretty sweet- only criticism I have is the same as for the one before it; a coat of gloss finish. It'll even out the paintjob, especially on the metal- gloss finish is horrible for tiny details, but for generally bringing a paintjob to a glistening even finish, it is the bomb!
I actually found that out painting miniatures back in the day- I made the mistake of using a glossy finish on a couple of my first ones, and all the fine detail went right out the window, but the paint looked a lot more even and less 'streaky'. And I never ever used gloss finish on a miniature again. LOL

They let you take that thing into the office and shoot people? That sounds like a great place to work lol NIce job on the sheet metal! ARe you still going to make the seperate removable barrels? Because I gotta say, I was more of a fan of #3 6 barreled death design.
Hey what kind of machine did you use to bend the metal? Some of the stuff I work on at the shipyard are the different shearing and shaping machines in the sheet metal shops. (that was some pretty sweet alliteration right there!)

Veeker I used a 8foot sheet metal press to bend it & to fold the corners. Its the only way to get the corners just right.
Chupa I confess I'm stumped on the best method to clear coat them both. I don't want to use a spray can because of getting runs in the paint. But I'm afraid of using a brush because it might smear the paint underneath. I'm all open to any suggestions you have ! Also the superglue worked great on the moving parts.

A brush will leave massively noticeable streaks.
You have to use a spray finish and use light misting sprays- sweep your arm across one way and spray, sweep it the other way and spray, then leave it alone and let it dry. This will just mist it with a light coating and you'll need to repeat it a handful of times or so to get the desired effect and protection (and it'll take the better part of a day or two), but it prevents runs and the like.

New updated pics & a newly completed gun... Maverick Vulcan RIOT rev-5 Spectre (Base Model) RIOT version pistol configuration rifle configuration Overall I'm very pleased with how they turned out. Thanks Chupa for recommending the clear coats. I wasn't sure if it would turn out right, but its even better than I could have imagined. The Spectre is just freakin awesome! The parts are swapable so you can change it as you wish. Originally I had painted the orange barrel tip of the pistol to match the gun. However when you snap on the "rifle" front end, it was so tight it almost broke the gun just getting it back off! So I scrapped off the paint & added the square metal piece on the sides to cover up the orange barrel which was visible when you assembled it. The coolest thing about the "rifle" front piece is the handgrip feels just like a shotgun pump...& it works too! Now to add a LED flashlight to the front & add another gun to the arsenal. Already got parts for a make a variation to this gun...more fun indeed!!!

Lookin' good, my son got one that looks a lot like that last rifle-style one and I've been considering it myself.
On the gloss finish thing, it apparently really depends on what kind you get. I recently repainted (and repainted and repainted) an Archangel figure's wings and finally settled on using a gloss coat to accent the metallic silver, and I didn't lose any of the detail that I'd gotten in, but then again, it's out of a spray can and a different brand than the paint I usually use.
If you wanna give it a shot, it's called Model Master clear gloss coat, really great stuff. Unfortunately I wasn't happy with the way the wings turned out- they looked really gritty and the wash was less effective than I'd hoped- so I'm rerereREpainting the wings, but I just applied the gloss coat over the flat matte coat and it looked frickin' beautiful. Beautiful enough that I had to paint this fucker better over it. *sigh*
