This one's gonna be kind of a quickie, but so far, I don't have anything much too bad to say about the game. But first, my gripes.
ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!
Have you played a Marvel vs. Capcom game before? Well, you've pretty much already played this game then.
That's NOT a bad thing. However, the game is lacking in originality. A lot of the characters from previous games play pretty much like they did in the older games (with some attacks gone, thanks to the simplified 4-button attack setup- Light, Medium, Hard and "Special" attacks). Wolverine plays pretty much like he always did. Ditto Captain America, Spidey, Ryu, Akuma, on and on- more or less the majority of the roster.
Stop making out and fight. Or something.
The disappointment comes in the new characters. Some (like Chris Redfield and Trish) are a breath of fresh air, with more or less completely new attacks and mechanics. However, a lot of the roster are ripoffs. Dormammu is the worst offender.
The devil you say!!!
He moves a lot like Blackheart from the previous games and has a moveset that plays like Blackheart combined with Thanos, but you get the general idea- you'll be playing the game and suddenly realize, wow, this character feels a lot like one of the characters in the previous games.
Also, as a proponent of the non-turbo games (I never did like when Capcom started speeding their games up), I have to say that the game is a little too fast. So much happens that it's hard to get a feel for a character at first; you have to take a few matches to really get an idea of what your guy can do (unless you want to hit training mode) before you have like any clue at all, because between the special effects, the speed, the constant tagging in and out and special moves, it's easy to go "WHOA- WTF just happened??"
I dunno, but I think a visit to the dentist is in order.
Finally, the roster is somewhat small, especially at first. I don't even know specifically how to unlock characters; all I know is that so far, my son and I logged a couple of hours on Versus mode and when we exited after our two play sessions, we'd unlocked Akuma the first time and the Sentinel the second. I have no Earthly clue how it happened though, unless it's a time unlock system or something.
Okay, enough griping. Let's talk about the fun!
OMFGGEEKGASM
As a hardcore addict of the Marvel-flavored Capcom games, I've done everything I can to play all of the originals in the best form possible. I imported X-Men: Children of the Atom (the ONLY way to get a home version right!!!), X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, AND Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter for the Sega Genesis. I somehow never got that into the first Marvel vs. Capcom- mainly because of the extremely limited roster, though I dug the hell out of the assist-only characters- but Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was my CRACK on the Dreamcast, and I've hated every version of it that I've played since, especially the one for the 360. It just felt stripped-down and like a HUGE waste of money.
And yes, I've done the MUGEN thing, and while several MUGEN attempts at a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 have been attempted, they always fell flat. No matter HOW fucking pimp Thor and Ghost Rider were. ;D
Now that we've established that I'm a Marvel/Capcom fighter freak, let me just say this: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is an absolutely perfect addition to the franchise. This game is all about accessibility and FUN. My son is a button masher and has little concept of 'quarter circle forward' or the standard 'dragon punch' input, but he's getting there; that said, he stomped my ass in for the first few matches until I started taking characters from previous games that I knew how to use. Then, his ass started getting flattened.
The game is basher friendly but skill IS rewarded. It's just a helluva game, and reminds me of all the good times I had with MvC2, but it's so much prettier.
Let's talk about the roster.
You start off with 34 characters. From left to right by row in the picture above: Albert Wesker (Resident Evil), Chris Redfield (RE), Doctor Doom, Dormammu, Akuma (1st unlock), Tron Bonne (Mega Man), Zero (MM), Super Skrull, M.O.D.O.K., Crimson Viper, Chun Li, Ryu, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Trish (Devil May Cry), Dante (DMC), Spider-Man, Storm, Amaterasu (Okami), Nathan "Rad" Spencer (shitty Bionic Commando remake), Viewtiful Joe, Wolverine, Deadpool, Magneto, Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Felicia (Darkstalkers), X-23, Phoenix, Sentinel (2nd unlock), Arthur (Ghosts 'n' Goblins), Mike Haggar (Final Fight), the Hulk, She-Hulk.
Not a bad bunch to start with, and organized by game & team where possible, which is just cool. Notice that the game is DOMINATED by X-Men though- 7 X-Men & related characters. Sheeeeeeeeit.
DLC if you preordered (and available in 3 weeks if you didn't) includes Jill Valentine (RE) and Shuma Gorath. Other unlockables are reportedly Taskmaster (w00t!) and Hsien-Ko, also from Darkstalkers.
So yeah, there's a lot of glaring omissions that everyone is up in arms about, and sure, I'll buy every DLC pack that's thrown at me, so if they offer up say, Venom, Sabretooth, or basically anyone that was in the game before, yeah, I'll snag those.
But Chupa, you say, how does it play?
Yeah, about like that. LOL
Controls are tight (it IS Capcom, folks; they make good fighters). You can customize, but on the 360, the forward shoulder buttons are tag partner controls (push for an assist, hold for tag) while the triggers are for specials (left trigger for team special, right trigger for individual special). The face buttons are your attacks, which have been dumbed down a bit, but that's okay because it gets more people playing- you get Light Attack, Medium Attack, Hard Attack and Special Attack, which tends to be your pop-up/juggle button. Select button taunts, which is GREAT with Deadpool!
You get a decent number of game modes in offline mode (I'm not EVEN getting online with this till it's officially out), with Arcade, Versus, Training, and Mission. Each is pretty much what it sounds like. Mission mode has specific missions for each character and really could've been incorporated into Training- it's not so much a game mode as it is a checklist of increasingly difficult challenges (say, perform a combo using an air combo) that teach you combos and how to best utilize a character's moves. Y'know. Like training mode.
The game is totally fan service. You unlock a ton of stuff to view as you so, especially for finishing the game, like viewable endings and character models and concept art and shit.
YAYYYYYYYYY!!!
Stages are awesome, mostly pulled from neato reference material. There's a wicked Ghosts 'n' Goblins level (MY FAVORITE!!!) that has that bastard boss Satan with his two faces spewing fire everywhere.
Sounds are what you'd expect. The voicework is VERY well done, with most of the characters in the game voiced by talent that have done them before, and the Marvel characters in particular voiced by actors that have voiced them in animated series and movies before, so you KNOW they sound right! The game also keeps track of an INSANE amount of info and gives you this nifty little card that sums everything up across several screens, and also lets you set your own preset teams that you can then use in-game without all that stupid selecting junk.
CARDS AND ICONS YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!
Anything I'm forgetting, let's see... endings are reportedly still pictures with text, which is disappointing but hey, what can you do, at least the game has that... and each character has 4 colors/costumes, some of which unlock different characters' outfits, but they're still on the same model. For example, Spidey has the Iron Spider suit, but no legs on the back. Captain America has the Red Guardian and Punisher Cap suits, but they're still on the regular Steve Rogers Cap suit.
That's about it. It's a helluva game, it's as pretty as they come (SWOON!!!) and it's so much fun to play that I actually dreamed about playing it all night before waking up and deciding I had to share the good news.
And maybe, y'know, play a few rounds. ;D
P.S. You like bullets? Deadpool, Dante and Chris Redfield. OMFG. BULLETSTORM.
Why? Because FUCK YOU, that's why.
...and now, for no reason at all, some Deadpool caps. (swwwwwwwooooooooonnnnnnn)
