Some of the entries on Mizer's CAW inspirations thread got me wondering, so I figured I'd ask. I haven't ever really even tallied my own up, so I'll start things off- this could get a lil verbose.
Depending on definition, I've had a lot of different experiences. I used to pick up the occasional wrestling mag, so back in the day I joined a pay-to-play mail order wrestling league- can't really remember the name, but I remember they had a ton of different companies, and I was in the Front Line League. I had a character, "The Annihilator" Theo Townsend, based on a more hand-to-hand Punisher-type comic hero I was drawing at the time. Didn't have much of a win record. Basically you picked like 10 moves from a large list, and every month different numerical values were assigned to the moves, and whoever got the highest sum total won the match. You could challenge folks- that's where I cut my first promos- and you could send in art, so like a lot of folks, I did. Got a monthly newsletter, tried to get some friends in, but I was only in it a few months.
Second fed was one I started. Some neighborhood friends would come over and we would play Nintendo games, and I had just gotten Tecmo World Wrestling, which was insanely good. The characters were all generic versions of different wrestlers, and you could rename them, which took forever, but I had a folder with our running results, who won what belts, we had events like Wrestlefest (before it became a WWF arcade game) and the like, so that was fun.
Third was again something I started- I was working at a small TV station up in Floyds Knobs, Indiana, and we only had a handful of folks there, but we were all wrestling fans to some extent. This was during the Attitude era. We would make compilation VHS tapes like Sing Along with the Rock (which had all of his best promos) and I eventually started a fed with characters based on everyone in the building and a few from our affiliate downtown on WrestleMania 2000 and later No Mercy on the N64. We'd come up with storylines, and being a TV station, we would have celebrities in the game too. We had the then 4 judges (Judge Judy, Judge Mathis, Judge Joe Brown, and Judge Larry from Texas Justice) and they had a huge match, we had a tag team of Glenn Danzig and Chuck Billy, I made a great sex change version of Richard Simmons, but all of the original characters were based on the people at the station. I'd record, edit together and leave tapes of the events there, and did a monthly newsletter with all the storyline stuff, which was mostly me, but everyone had a good time with it. (Except the few folks with unflattering avatars that didn't know they were in it, LOL)
Caught wind of the whole efed thing on GameFAQs one night, and I was going to join one, but none of them seemed like a right fit. I wanted a good, impartial rankings system (which VERY few had), a universe where characters didn't have to be grounded in reality because fuck that, I can walk outside if I want reality (and God knows most of them didn't have that), a focus on original characters (a BIG no-no in most feds), and generally something fun and cool. But I couldn't find shit. So I figured I'd start my own. I put out some feelers and we got a good number of folks interested, and on February 14th, 2003, we had our first event, and I remember we went through a ton of posts on the GameFAQs boards. I wish I had those archived. Promos and everything in one ongoing thread, and when we hit the 500-post limit, we would just start a new thread. Before too long, we set up our own forums on a free server (the old ionichost site) until after a good while they started hitting us with pop-ups laden with viruses and malware. And then boom, we came here.
Now, here's where my memory gets kind of sucky, so bear with me. I know I have a lot of stuff archived and could probably rummage around and get the facts, but I'll just plow ahead.
After a while I wanted to try efedding somewhere where I wasn't the head honcho (and by that time I wasn't anyway- I'd established the Owners Committee to run the fed because I'd burnt out, but I was still somewhat active). The rest of these won't be in order- probably not, anyway.
I know in 2005 I joined a smaller fed, XWM (whose owner was in OCW for like a minute), with a generic version of Minion called The Wraith. I helped them out with some graphics work, but they shit on me somehow, I can't even remember at this point. VCJ came in as my partner in crime with a masked wrestler named Kid Chaos (secretly the Rage). In the meantime, just goofing around, I figured out the admin's password (it was a proboards board- all site founders have the username admin, and his password was something stupid like "password") and read some PMs where he was slamming me to one of the other higher-ups. So VCJ ended up with a title shot and took the belt. It couldn't have went any better. He cut a promo revealing who he was and pretty much took the belts. Then I (lord I was a bastard, lol) totally fucked their forums. I think I deleted most of the posts, reset all of the graphics to stupid shit, and left versions of the logo I created for them up with stuff posted over it like "assfucked by your friends in OCW" and the like. LOL
At some point, I briefly joined MAWL. Honestly again, I don't really remember much of it. I remember the first promo I cut had Chupa arriving at the wrong arena, and I thought that was funny as hell. I always dug MAWL's semi-automated setup. It was just boss. I can't recall exactly why I left, but the fact that I don't remember much about my time there at all probably indicates that there wasn't much to remember.
Let's see, I know I joined MMW, which was one of the mpiremall.net's (now mpiremall.info) many efeds, and pretty much the main one on their boards. They hosted several, but this one was like, their main one. I had some fun there, and it gave me the idea to transition OCW to one of MDickie's games for our short, disasterous 2010 season.
Everything was cool in the fed, and I was doing okay. My main problem was (as usual) people who don't know how to promo without just stepping all over other folks. I managed to amend this with most of the guys and worked it out okay, but I got tired of it all pretty quick and quit, leaving permission to use my characters, including some NPCs I had made for my own use. I think I used Chupa and the Sinner Twins there. Then, things got shady- people got banned for posting live WrestleMania streams in their shoutbox, which they had never had problems with before, and when I called them on the hypocracy of the move, they just covered it up, deleted a shit ton of threads and acted like assholes. I ended up getting banned (because when don't I? lol) and then one of their admins, High Flying Dwarf, followed me here and kept posting shit in our shoutbox at the time, using proxies to get around me banning him. Either way I really didn't dig helping out a little with some code for their big stupid mod (I figured out how to set it up so each fed could have its own different, separate belts) and then getting shit on over something they just arbitrarily started doing and then covered up, so fuck them then and fuck them now.
There was some other fed I joined for like half a minute- it would've been 2009 I think- hazeone here, the guy that owned J.D. Haze, started some efed that looked promising. I think he got as far as collecting and making some CAWs and then it folded, he was doing some metal noise project I couldn't get into called Defenestration Machine and that was pretty much the last I heard of it. I really don't think they had even one show.
So I think I've been in 8. That sounds right. But when it comes right down to it, I always come back to OCW, because OCW meant more to me than the actual wrestling back then, and it still does. I mean, I enjoy some ROH, and still watch a lot of WWE's PPVs (or at least highlights), but when it comes right down to it, I care a lot more about the characters that we've had here than most anything that's happened in wrestling since 2003.
Except Dalton Castle. He's AWESOME.
